The Conspiracy Theory

Kurt Cobain was a very popular grunge music artist and was one of the lead vocalists in the band Nirvana. Despite the band’s success, Cobain struggled with mental illness and substance abuse. In 1994, Kurt Cobain was found dead in his greenhouse with a gunshot wound to his head. Examiners found that he died three days prior to being found and his body had a lethal amount of heroin in his blood. The amount of heroin was capable of killing him instantly though a suicide note was found on the scene. Furthermore, the high from the heroin would have rendered him incapable of carrying out his suicide via shotgun. It is speculated that he was murdered by his wife Courtney Love because he was in the process of removing her from his will and filing for divorce. A documentary on the death of Kurt Cobain suggested Courtney Love offered several men monetary compensation to kill her husband and aside from sending a cease and desist, Love did not do much to sway public opinion of her involvement in his death.

Dentith’s Definition of Conspiracy Theories

-The conspiracy must explain the occurrence of an event
-There are agents responsible for the plan and they operate in secrecy
-There is an end goal to the orchestrated event and the agents are responsible for their desired outcome

Is it a Conspiracy Theory?

The murder of Kurt Cobain by his wife Courtney Love explains a historical event. Nirvana was a very popular band in the early 90s and news of Cobain’s death made national headlines. Courtney Love (the agent) seems to be responsible for the event and operated in secrecy (save for a few possible hitmen she hired) to reach her end goal. There is a lot of evidence that suggests she was planning to kill Cobain. One week before Kurt Cobain’s death, he was admitted to the hospital after overdosing on alcohol, a pediatric anesthesia, and Rohypnol, the latter of which was prescribed to Courtney herself (1). He had no recollection of the event but Courtney’s recount changed (1) and she was seen riding with him to the hospital with a full face of make-up, alluding to prior planning of this event. There was an infamous interview with El Duce, one of the men Courtney supposedly hired to kill Cobain though the interviewer refused to ask the man detailed questions regarding his recruitment and El Duce died a few days after the interview. This possible coverup adds to the condition of secrecy because it shows she was attempting to minimize public awareness. El Duce was a loose end that was going to the press about his failed recruitment into the murder and this threatened to expose Courtney’s operation. Courtney hiring people to do her bidding suggests she is responsible for the plan and her end goal is made clear through her hiring hitmen. In addition to her end goal of eliminating her husband, there were financial motivations behind her desire to kill him. The two were apparently arguing and about to get divorced. Cobain was making moves to cut her off financially and remove her from his will which gave her the motivation to kill him and cover it up under the guise of a mentally ill substance abuser committing suicide. The apparent event (suicide) can be more logically explained as being a murder. Kurt Cobain’s autopsy revealed he had three times the lethal amount of heroin in his system, rendering him unconscious and unable to perform the basic motor functions necessary to grab a shotgun, angle it to his head, and pull the trigger. Furthermore, the shotgun and suicide letter were not found to have any legible fingerprints, not even from Cobain himself (2) despite him being found gloveless. With this being said, the murder of Kurt Cobain at the hands of his estranged wife Courtney Love should be considered a conspiracy theory according to Dentith.
